Shasta became one of the first of twenty-seven counties in California in 1850. Before the 1900's European settlers came to Redding and Shasta County during the Goldrush. The area was home to five indigenous tribes; the Pit River Indian, The Hat Creek Indians, Okwanuchu, The Wintu and The Yana Indians.
As gold mining became less predominate, the settlers found other forms of economy such as copper mining, lumber, and agriculture. The county was the hub for these prosperous industries for many years with the exception of the copper and zinc mining closed in 1927.
